Introduction to Core City of Pune as the Larger Context

Pune – the city of culture and heritage, has always been a city with booming urbanism and fast approaching metro life, but what it mainly stands for is its historical connect.

The Peth areas in Pune which are now a part of old city offer a very different perspective of this city.

The area/s around Shaniwar Wada are distinctly characterised by dense urban fabric, Traditional typology architecture (Wadas) , bustling markets (Mandai) , etc.

Introduction to Kasba Peth as the Immediate Context

Kasba Peth (also known as the 'Heart of the City') is the area of initiation of Pune as a city. It's the oldest residential area and is estimated to have been established somewhere around 5th Century.

Known for the most famous Kasba Ganapati and Shaniwar Wada this area also offers a peak in the indigenous, traditional craft and business communities known like 'Tambat Ali’ (lane of copper) etc.

Introduction to the Site

One such park, located in the KasbaPeth area is 'SwargiyaMinatai Thackeray Udyan'.

A narrow garden with Nala(canal) on one side, road on the other and traditional and vernacular buildings around, this garden is just another of pockets that needs to be looked at sensitively.

It is green with lots of local flora and fauna. Currently the park is in a sort of dilapidated condition and is neglected due to which it’s not used that efficiently. This is not the case with only this park but a lot of other parks as well.
