Revitalizing City Parks- Bamboo Theme Park
Introduction to Breathable Spaces
In the dense hustle bustle of beautiful urban fabric, there exist some pockets of open areas which help in achieving urban breathability and space. These pockets have been used, celebrated and eventually ignored or developed over time.
Parks as a Public Spaces
Few of the open spaces have been converted into parks. The intention behind this is good, however the current condition of these parks is that the intent with which this was put forward hasn't been met. The idea behind a park is to provide spaces of play, exercise, meditation, etc. to the people.
Nowadays these activities aresubjected to happen largely on the footpaths, which is not an ideal situation. The parks have been subjected to only a space with a name where very minimal activity happens on fixed times. They are targeting very specific crowd, which makes is not useful for the remaining public. The maintenance is poor, it's not attracting the general demographic and it remains closed most of time.
Importance of Parks /Why city parks as a Proposed Site
-
City parks and open spaces improve our physical and psychological health and make our cities and neighbourhoods more attractive places to live, work and play.
-
Establishing and maintaining urban parks helps revitalize communities in a variety of ways including increasing economic development opportunities; increasing daily physical activity; reconnecting children with nature; and reducing crime by providing safe, healthy alternatives for at-risk youth. But most importantly, urban parks play an important role in improving public health.
-
It is well established that physical activity helps prevent obesity and related medical problems. And there is mounting evidence that providing places to exercise (parks primarily) improves health. Research is also uncovering physical and mental health benefits simply by interacting with nature: reduced levels of attention deficit in children, improved cognitive ability, reduced aggressive behaviours and a general recharging of the brain. Increasingly, a growing clamour from doctors, parents, overweight persons, and even those who just want to strengthen muscles, lungs, and hearts suggests that people today want more from their parks.
Overall Theme
The Theme of the competition is to advance parks in public areas, recreation and environmental conservation efforts that enhance the quality of life for all people, using BAMBOO as a basic material in order to increase the awareness among the people through Revitalizing Public Parks which are in neglected conditions in and around Pune City(Live site - Public park near Kasaba Peth Pune which has a Nala stream running through the park)
The idea is to create a Bamboo Theme Park as model type, where a 3600 understandingof a city park is expected, in which the entire park landscape, objects, elements in the park pavilions used, etc. will be all made up of bamboo.
The ultimate thought through this competition is that the design proposals of the winning entriescan be executed into reality within the same park in order to increase the awareness of bamboo as a material and to spread its use in construction within city and general public.
Bamboo – a true equivalent of ‘Kalpavriksha’ (Tree of Life) is one of the few materials which can be used entirely to right from as huge load bearing columns to fabrics and thing weave sheets.
The challenge of this year's MahaBamboo Design Competition 2019 is to use bamboo and transform this site into something that is attractive, functional, responding the context, sustainable and most importantly something that can be open throughout the day.
